Swedish Vallhunds

Not only do we operate a high quality dog boarding facility, we raise Swedish Vallhunds.

The Swedish Vallhund is an ancient breed of dog.  They are known as the "legacy of the Vikings".  Hailing from the country of Sweden, they were used as all purpose farm dogs.  With their short legs, agility and speed, they are ideally suited to cattle herding. Swedish Vallhunds make very devoted companions.

New Arrivals

Gold Legacy is very proud to announce the arrival of four beautiful puppies born July 7,2010 to Ch Elsa Osafin and CH Eklund's Goldstrike. Two little girls are available at this time.

Appearance

The appearance of the Swedish Vallhund is a medium-sized dog of about 33 cm (13”), with a slightly longer body than tall.  They are well-muscled, powerful and robust, with a keen alert attitude. The topcoat is medium short with a soft woolly undercoat, providing weather and water resistance. The colour of the coat varies from light to dark shades of grey or reddish yellow with lighter shades found on the cheeks, throat, belly, buttocks, feet and hocks.  A hallmark of the breed is its distinctive and most desirable lighter facial mask, and harness markings near the shoulder and upper arm.  The tail is a distinguishable feature, with many puppies being born without a tail or with a short stump, while others may be born with varying lengths through to a full tail.

Temperament

Swedish Vallhunds make great companions and can also be used for herding and catching rats.  They love human attention and are very devoted to their owners.  They are a clownish type dog and can be a show-off at times. The Swedish Vallhund is responsive and even-tempered with most people, but they can be wary of strangers and should be properly socialized and trained as a puppy as to avoid over-protective behaviour as an adult. They will try to guard your home even if they are too small for the job at hand. They are also known for heel nipping due to their inbuilt herding traits. This is a habit that can either be encouraged for working farm dogs or discouraged in companion pets.

A Swedish Vallhund may be the right dog for you if you want:

- A "big dog" with short legs (built long and low to the ground, but with a robust body, heavy bone,

  and a working dog temperament)

- A short easy-care coat

- A spirited and athletic dog, but needs only moderate exercise to maintain his muscle tone

- A dog with the working intelligence of a herding breed but with a playful nature

- A dog that is polite with guests and makes a sensible watchdog

- A dog that is usually fine with other family pets, and especially good with livestock
